Henri Matisse

1869-1954

  • Henri Matisse is regarded as one of the most important French painters of his time. Matisse led the Fauvist movement of the 1900s and continued to incorporate more and more expression of self through use of color. His style has changed vastly over time as Matisse transitioned from more provincial tastes to a more avant garde styling in the late 1890s. From this point on, Matisse flourished as an artist and worked alongside many impressionists of the era. As time went on Matisse moved away from the “tyranny of pointillism” in favor of a more colorful and emotional palette of Fauvism. Matisse is probably best known for his series of blue nudes, one of the last art forms he worked in before his death in 1954.
